President Arthur Peter Mutharika has urged Malawians to work hard for their economic freedom  and for the development of the country.

Mutharika was speaking during the commemoration of the Independence Day at Bingu International Conference Centre in the capital Lilongwe on Wednesday, July 6.

The state president said it is the duty of each and every citizen of this country to change the situation in which the country is going through and claimed that working hard is the best way to end poverty.

“In my independence national address, am asking all Malawians to work hard for economic freedom. It is our duty to change our situation,” said Mutharika.

He added  there is a good lesson people in the country need to learn from the holy Quran on Surat chapter 13 which states that ‘we know that God cannot change the condition of the people until people themselves choose to change that condition’.

The Malawi leader then hailed his presidency saying during his reign he has managed to change a lot of things and to introduce reforms.

  52. Thats a good piece of advice Professor Peter. We will improve on this. However, you may wish to consider the fact that CORRUPTION is also derailing the economic progress of this country. Too much money is going into the personal bank accounts of very few officials, companies connected to people with names.

    secondly, u may wish to cut on the number of advisors that u have hired on board. Does it mean that the minister do not furnish u with enough information/advice? or should we say it takes a very big team of advisors for you to understand something?

    with due respect professor, u may also wish to cut on the extravagances in the public relations eg the issue of a new convoy, u may just buy one or two cars……not replacing the whole convoy. The number of state houses is also too much for a country like Malawi; How many white houses does USA have?
