Man sleeps on while house burns down

A grocery shop and a house were razed down in in Villa Kagwentha area along M1 in Mzuzu while the owner was sleeping inside the house.

The occupant suffered serious burns but knew nothing about the fire until in the morning when he woke up.

Police Public Relations Officer for Mzuzu Police Station Martin Bwanali identified the survivor as 27 year-old Aaron Ndabandaba who lives alone in the house.

Ndabandaba’s shelter is made up of timber planks and thatched with plastic paper and glass. He also has a similar structure which he uses as a grocery shop.

He told Police that he went to bed on 10th May 2016 at around 10 pm. He said he drinks but he was not drunk the previous night.

“When Police officers rushed to the scene it was discovered that the survivor woke up in the morning very blank about the fire. Upon waking up, he was dumbfoundedly surprised seeing a serious big burn covering the larger part of his left leg.

“However he knew it was fire after seeing the roof was also in ashes and that his trouser was partially burnt,” said Bwanali.

Police took him to Mzuzu Central Hospital where he has been admitted. Meanwhile, Police are investigating the issue to establish the cause of the fire.

Ndabandaba comes from Chinthuli Ziba village, T/A Kampingo Sibande in Mzimba district.
