Police in Dowa district are keeping in custody two men who were instrumental in mobilising a mob that damaged Nalunga Police Unit in the district.
Dowa police Public Relations Officer Richard Kaponda confirmed the arrest of Katengesa Chillusa, 24, and Scariot Chilusa, 72.
Kaponda said the mob damaged the police unit following the arrest of a man who is suspected to have murdered a relative of the Chilusas.
He explained that the arrested suspect, Rondolani Gwani, 32, murdered 31 year-old Geoffrey Kansinjiro following rumours that the latter was in a love affair with the former’s wife.
“Kansinjiro’s relatives searched for him in the village and later found him dead, after that they reported the matter to police,” Kaponda said.
After being tipped that Gwani had surrendered himself to police for security reasons, Kansinjiro’s relatives late mobilised other villagers and stormed the station.
According to Kaponda, the mob managed to overpower the police officers who were on duty that day and injured the suspect severely.
“The suspect is at Dowa District hospital where he is receiving treatment after being beaten up severely by the mob,” he explained.
Gwani comes from Kanthama village, Katengesa Chilusa is from Kapowa village while Scariot Chilusa comes from Kabisa village, and all villages are in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa district.
