The 2016 Presidential Cup draw for the regional playoffs will take place today, 26th April, 2016 at the Chiwembe Technical Centre from 10 am.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions manager Gomegzani Zakazaka has said that district champions, regional leagues teams, and youth teams that qualified into this phase will be paired against Super League teams in their respective regions for the regional playoffs.
Zakazaka further said that the teams that finished in the top eight in last season’s Tnm Super League will not face each other in the regional playoffs.
He added that the winners of the first round matches involving seeded teams will also be seeded for the second round draw.
After the regional playoffs, 16 teams of which 7 from the South, 5 from the Centre and 4 from the North will qualify for the National round of 16 draw.
26 teams will be drawn for the regional playoffs in the southern region and only 4 southern region teams out of the 26 teams will be seeded as they finished in the top 8 last season.
The 4 teams that have been seeded in the south are, Be forward Wanderers, Nyasa Big Bullets, Azam Tigers and Red Lions.
The other Super League teams which have not been seeded are Wizards FC and Max Bullets.
The 13 district champions in the southern region that will be draw in the regional playoffs are namely: Umodzi fc- Nsanje, Sable Farming-Blantyre, Dululu- Chikwawa, Chiradzulu Police-Chiradzulu, Sayama- Mulanje, Mwanza Madrid -Mwanza, Chikolomo- Mangochi, Migowi FC- Phalombe, Partners in Health-Neno, Songani Veterans -Zomba, Balaka Eagles- Balaka, Nsanama- Machinga and Victory Rangers-Thyolo.
Four regional leagues teams that have qualified are MDF Marine, Cobbe Barracks, Zomba United and Hard Knockers.
While the three Youth Teams that have qualified in the south are Maggie Chombo Academy- Blantyre, Disciples- Zomba and Police Reserves -Mangochi.
The first round of the Presidential Cup in the south will produce 13 winners and they will be drawn again for the second round where the last team to be drawn out will be on bye and the remaining 12 teams will be drawn to battle for the six slots in the National draw.
The central region has 23 teams that will battle it out in the regional playoffs and out of the 23 teams, seven are Super League teams.
Super League teams have been seeded in the central region are Blue Eagles, Mafco, Silver Strikers and Kamuzu Barracks whereas Epac fc, Civo United and Dwangwa United are the other three Super League teams that will be drawn in the regional playoffs.
The nine central region district champions that have qualified into this year’s presidential are Madisi Madrid- Dowa, Ambassadors FC -Ntchidra, Dwangwa Town Hammers- Nkhotakota, Tiakalulu- Lilongwe, Maganga- Salima, Chulu- Kasungu, Nkanda Youth-Mchinji, Lake Valley – Ntcheu and Dedza Young Soccer Reserves- Dedza.
Kasungu Medicals, Master Security, Nsundwe and Food FC will also be drawn.
Three youth teams – Pac United- Lilongwe, Soccer Saints- Dedza and Mkweza Youth-Mchinji – have also been included in the draw.
The last team to be drawn out of the 23 teams will be on bye while the 22 teams will battle it out for the 11 places in the second round.
In the North only 15 teams will be drawn in this year’s presidential regional playoffs and two of them – Mzuni fc and Moyale Barracks – are Super League teams.
The 7 districts champions that have qualified are Zolozolo – Mzuzu, Masendesende-Chitipa, Uliwa- Karonga, Rumphi Pirates -Rumphi, Manyamula- Mzimba, Usisya- Nkhatabay and Green Rangers-Likoma.
Whereas the four regional leagues teams are Karonga United, Kabwafu FC, Chutipa United and Mchenga Utuwa.
Two youth teams that will be drawn in today’s draw are Malema- Karonga and Fish Eagle- Mzuzu
The first team to be drawn out will be on bye while the other 14 will battle for the 7 places in the second round.
The regional playoffs will be played between the 30th April and 11th of May 2016.
