Man fined for growing chamba in game reserve

The Nkhotakota first grade magistrate court has fined a man for encroaching into Nkhotakota Game Reserve and cultivating cannabis Sativa locally known as Chamba.

According to Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Williams Kaponda, the man, Bernado Mikayele, 32, has been convicted and ordered to pay a fine of K40, 000 or in default to serve two years imprisonment with hard labour for illegal entry into the game reserve.

He has also been sentenced to pay a fine K200, 000 or in default to serve 6 years in prison for cultivating Chamba.

If he fails to pay the fines Mikayele will go to jail and serve the sentences concurrently.

The convict hails from Kapelura village, Traditional Authority Kapichira in Kasungu.
