If you thought you have President Peter Mutharika cornered over the impending famine he has declared a national disaster then think again, that is the message the Malawi leader has made in his appeal for assistance.

Mutharika: Hunger is caused by God!

In an address in which the Malawi leader made on Tuesday, 12 April, following a season of erratic rains, Peter Mutharika said that the drought in the country should not be blamed on him or the party he leads.

“Do not politicise hunger,” said Mutharika targeting his critics who have mostly said that it is the failure of his government to plan and promote irrigation farming that Malawi is going through a food scarcity patch.

“Hunger is not caused by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Hunger is not caused by Peter Mutharika,” he said although in good times even rain patterns are attributed to the President.

“Hunger is caused by God,” the Malawi leader said heaping blame on God.

Meanwhile Mutharika has appealed for help

We have all water resources at our disposal but we dont utilise this. Why should we always rely on rain fed agriculture yet we have a massive body of water with which we can do irrigation(ulimi otaya madzi) and feed the nation at large.As a nation we have to set our priorities right.
