Trouble! Roman Catholic faithfuls fight in Lilongwe

There was commotion today at Likuni Catholic Parish in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, when Roman Catholic faithfuls exchanged over blows over conflicting calls to transfer a priest as well as other internal matters against the committee at the church, Malawi24 has learnt.

It is said that it has for long been a concern of some ‘faction’ at the church to be against the priest Father Ted Kaulesi and the committee whom they accuse of not cooperating with the views of members among others.

In the sustained pursuit of their wishes, among other things, the members wrote the District Commissioner to intervene but it just did not on the basis that the row was within the church and as such it would not place its nose in the church issues.

But tired with their calls, the said angry members ganged up and stopped the prayers sessions today just when the priest was on the alter to celebrate the Mass with them.

This then led to commotion in the church with another group in defence of the priest and the committee, until fights broke up in and just outside the church.

It was as the fights went on that good Samaritans protected the priest and the law enforcers were quick to arrive at the church.

Malawi24 understands that at the moment up to seven people have been arrested in connection with the mayhem.

No casualties have been reported.

The arrested include those that ignited the rows and those the law enforcers found at the nick of things at the church.

At the moment, the Episcopal Conference of Malawi and Police are yet to make statements on the row.
