Youth Health Network (YOHNET) together with health workers at Bwaila District hospital in Lilongwe have asked government to transfer senior officers at Lilongwe District Health Office (DHO) whom they say are involved in fraud and corruption.
According to a letter signed by YOHNET chairman Charles Kapichi and addressed to the ministry of health, the organisation discovered that there is massive corruption and fraud at Lilongwe DHO.
The organisation has accused workers at the health office of stealing stole bicycles meant for Health Surveillance Assistants and of failing to pay allowances to legitimate recipients.
The workers are also being accused of creating workshops to defraud government and of stealing drugs and nutritious foods.
The organisation has since demanded the transfer of the DHO and other senior officers.
YOHNET hopes transferring the officers will give a chance to Anti-Corruption Bureau to investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, Yohnet organised a protest on Wednesday at Bwaila Hospital where one of its members was arrested by police on charges of causing public disorder within hospital premises.
