Chief elderly programs officer in the ministry of gender, children, disability and social welfare Steve Vinkhumbo said government has put in place measures to see to it that the elderly are protected.

”We are working on a feasibility study on the secure amount of money for the elderly aged 60 and above and once we are done then we will see to it that the elderly start receiving their pension fee,” said Vinkhumbo.

He added that government has developed a national policy which is a guiding framework for developing interventions to improve the lives of the elderly.

Vinkhumbo further said the ministry is conducting campaigns to create awareness to the public and the elderly to know their rights.

Meanwhile, some elderly people in the country have been facing a lot of violence as people accuse them of being wizards.

  17. The idea is good. For once, however, let me be labeled a doubting Thomas on making a reality this idea. The million kwacha question is WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM? Govt is failing to address pertinent issues due to lack of funds, for instance, govt is failing to recruit people it has spent a lot of money on their training, people who would contribute to economic devpt. This, we are told, due to govt’s lack of money. So where will money come from? Am very skeptical. I ll clap hands when the idea is actually effected……..

  18. Boma likamatelo ndiye layamba zanzeru, chifukwa ambiri achinyamata amathamangila ku south Africa ndi cholinga choti mwina angapulumutse azigogo awo pamavuto, ndiye kwanilitsani muzawona mavoti azakhaladi Ali anuanudi.

  19. It’s a good idea as long as selection of beneficiaries is transparent and not politically motivated. Otherwise it shouldn’t be another outlet for embezzling taxpayers’ money, because I can notice that some departments are creating their ways of cashgating…..

  20. Sometimes z better to support brilliant idea like dis one. At R S A they started long time ago bravo govt don’t allow any one to discourage this idea.

  22. i dont agree with this, if de government is failing to raise salaries of civil servants, whats the need of giving money to unproductive
people….dont be fooled with the UK or other super rich countries who implemented such program… the best we can is empower workforce not someone whp is producing nothing for the country.

  35. this government just focusing on votes rather than on Malawi’s health, we are in economic crisis what will this going to help boost our economy back on track….. heal our economy first Mr Presdent because charity works will take us no where…. find other means in helping them not allowances….. and to look deeper into the root of this initiative, somebody just wana root something….. i dont trust these politicians any longer

  36. But please don’t support to my area, our chief is greedy he will squander all the money, even the coupons he writes people who have already passed away,so if u can come with this development hopefuly magogo will not benefit at all

  37. Exactly, who are the elders who will qualify for this? Who will identify them? Who will be collecting the cash on behalf of those who will not be able to reach the collection point? Who will be entrusted with reporting of deaths? Is cash for this available or will the programme be externally funded?

  38. Thus stupid, alot of people are jobless and yet gvnt is planning abnormally aaaa if jobs can be available then people will help their grandparents not wat gvnt is thinking

  44. let’s do this plz:therefore it means we are moving forward. In some other developed nations such as Libya,South Africa, they do the same

  45. This is a very noble idea if it is to be sustained. If not then its not good to start at all. But the question is who will foot the Bill. The number of the employed who would support this social security venture is shrinking by the day as companies have embarked on mass retrenchments due to the poor economic enviroment. I hope govt is not looking at some donor who can later frustrate the project which has good intentions. We know how our donors behave just as they know us.
