Govt to start giving allowances to the elderly

The Malawi Government says it is conducting a feasibility study on the secure amount of money to be given to the elderly as allowances.

Chief elderly programs officer in the ministry of gender, children, disability and social welfare Steve Vinkhumbo said government has put in place measures to see to it that the elderly are protected.

”We are working on a feasibility study on the secure amount of money for the elderly aged 60 and above and once we are done then we will see to it that the elderly start receiving their pension fee,” said Vinkhumbo.

He added that government has developed a national policy which is a guiding framework for developing interventions to improve the lives of the elderly.

Vinkhumbo further said the ministry is conducting campaigns to create awareness to the public and the elderly to know their rights.

Meanwhile, some elderly people in the country have been facing a lot of violence as people accuse them of being wizards.

  75. The idea is good. For once, however, let me be labeled a doubting Thomas on making a reality this idea. The million kwacha question is WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM? Govt is failing to address pertinent issues due to lack of funds, for instance,govt is failing to recruit people it has spent a lot of money on their training,people who would contribute to economic devpt. This, we are told, due to govt’s lack of money. So where will money come from? Am very skeptical. I ll clap hands when the idea is actually effected……..

  224. This is a very noble idea if it is to be sustained. If not then its not good to start at all. But the question is who will foot the Bill. The number of the employed who would support this social security venture is shrinking by the day as companies have embarked on mass retrenchments due to the poor economic enviroment. I hope govt is not looking at some donor who can later frustrate the project which has good intentions. We know how our donors behave just as they know us.
