Police arrest man who murdered watchman

Police officers in the district of Machinga on Monday are keeping in custody a 20 year-old man who is being accused of killing a watchman.

Machinga police have identified the suspect as Panganani Jafali and the deceased as 94 year-old Ruben Kamoyo.

knife-bloodSpeaking to Malawi24, Machinga police public relations officer Davie Sulumba said the deceased who was on duty as a watchman of Domasi Water Users Association rice mill was brutally killed by the suspect on the night of 19 February this year.

“The suspect went to steal at the maize mill at midnight and found Kamoyo on his usual duty. He beat him with a metal object and broke into the rice mill and managed to walk away with a bag of rice,” Sulumba said.

The deceased was found dead at the mill in the morning and a postmortem conducted at Chamba Health Centre, revealed that Kamoyo died due to strangulation.

Jafali is in in the cooler and will appear before court to answer charges of murder in accordance with section 209 of the penal code.

The suspect hails from Muyaya village Traditional Authority Mposa of Machinga district while the deceased hailed from Namasalima village Traditional Authority Kumtumanji in Zomba district.
