Rapist jailed for 13 years

The Ntchisi Magistrate Court on Thursday sentenced a 24 year-old man to 13 years in jail for forcing himself on a minor.

The man, Lazaro Dzuwa, who lives in Kamphambale village found the victim at a borehole and enticed her to accompany him to his garden, where he raped the girl and later gave her two cobs of maize and sugarcane.

CourtThe issue was reported to police and the law enforcers arrested Dzuwa.

During mitigation in court, Dzuwa said he was acting under the influence of Chamba which he had bought from the girl’s father. He asked the magistrate to impose a community service sentence so that he could care for his old mother and his sisters.

Passing judgement, Ntchisi First Grade Magistrate, Dorothy Kaluwa, said defilement is a serious case and the rapist deserved a stiffer punishment.

She said it was surprising that despite the courts giving stiff punishment to offenders, men in the country continue to rape girls.

Dzuwa hails from Kamphambale village in Traditional Authority Chilooko in Ntchisi.
