Two children die after eating poisonous roots

StethoscopeTwo children have died while another one has been admitted at Mua hospital in Dedza after taking poisonous roots that looks like cassava.

According to reports, the parents of the children left them home when they went to search for food in neighbouring communities and the children ate the roots after starving.

Mtakataka police officer in charge Gideon Msambo confirmed the incident and said the children started vomiting after they had eaten the poisonous plants.

He identified the children who have died as Pemphero Mulinde and Dediyi Mtembo from Mkumbi village, Traditional Authority Kachindamoto in Dedza.

On several occasions, President Peter Mutharika and his ministers have insisted that no one in Malawi will die of hunger this year.

An assessment by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) shows that 2.8 million people in the country are facing hunger and are in need of food assistance.
