Malawi Police in Blantyre have arrested a maize vendor and a driver for transporting maize without supporting documents.
The vendor, Adam 21 and his driver Jameson Mwanyambo, 33, got arrested as they were transporting the grains from Dedza district to Luchenza on February 8 just after midnight.
Speaking to Malawi24, Blantyre Police Assistant Public Relation Officer Andrew Mayawo said the two had 302 bags of maize in vehicle registration number BR 4083.
“Following a call from our President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to deal with vendors, we are working around the clock to ensure that only those who are supposed to buy maize from Admarc depots are the ones that are less privileged, so these suspects have been found with bags of maize without supporting documents and we believe they will explain in court of law where they got the grains,” said Mayawo.
According to Mayawo, the suspects tried to bribe the officers with cash amounting to K5000 to be allowed to pass through the roadblock that was mounted at Chemusa Township in the city.
The two are yet to appear in court to answer charges of being found with property believed to have been stolen.
Mwanyambo hails from Mwitere village, Traditional Authority (TA) Nanseta in Thyolo district while Adam comes from Abudu village, TA Nthilamanja in Mulanje district.
