Some supporters of Malawi’s former ruling People’s Party (PP) became very angry on Sunday and called their once beloved leader madam Joyce Banda “brainless” for her decision to appoint Uladi Mussa as acting president of the party.

They made the remarks after disrupting a meeting organized by Mussa and PP third vice president Kamlepo Kalua in Mzuzu which among other things was aimed at uniting the two separate factions that emerged in the party after a leadership crisis.

The irate supporters told Malawi24 that they wanted to assault Mussa and his colleagues as one way of showing them that most people in the northern region are not in support of their appointment.

Banda: Blamed.

“We are not violent but we thought this idiot was challenging us in our own territory. How can he come here and start commanding us as if we are his subjects? What we know is that Mussa and his team are all useless to us, in short we don’t count them as our leaders,” fumed one supporter who looked very angry.

Another one regretted supporting Banda and her PP saying they have since betrayed his trust such that he felt like manhandling the whole national executive committee for letting one person make appointments.

Another said: “Joyce Banda has betrayed people from northern region such that I don’t think people will love her any more. We didn’t think she could turn us down like this.”

However, some members claimed that these people were thugs hired by former PP member Mzomera Ngwira who has since been fired and former vice president Khumbo Kachali who are believed to be against the appointment of Mussa and Kalua.

Mercy Mbulo said: “They wanted to ambush Mussa. That was their plan. I was here before Mussa’s car was blocked and all they were saying was that they wanted to ambush him. The thugs were very prepared.”
