The International World Games Association (IWGA) has confirmed that Mwawi Kumwenda has won the 2015 athlete of the year.
The Malawi National Netball team shooter was competing with 17 athletes from other continents.
The voting session ended on 31 January, with Kumwenda registering 17910 whiled the runners up only managed to amass 9168 votes in total.
“I have just received an email to confirm that I am now officially IWGA athlete of the year 2015. I thank God for this time of the year,” wrote Mwawi on her Facebook timeline.
She becomes the first Malawian and African to win such an award.
She was named player of the tournament at last year’s netball tourney in Australia where she had a shot success rate of 91 percent and netted 321 goals in eight games.
She is currently playing her netball in New Zealand.
