There is pandemonium in Mzuzu as Kabanza owners have closed the road leading to Mzuzu Airport.
Reports say the police wanted to stop the Kabanza owners from operating within the city and this led to the tense situation.
According to our sources, there is a heavy police presence in the area and the cops are using teargas to scatter the angry crowd.
However, Malawi24 understands that the Kabanza owners popularly known as Sacramentos in Mzuzu are successfully battling the riot police officers and teargas.
“The police officers have been overpowered and they are being beaten by the Sacramento owners,” said source. “There is chaos in Mzuzu.” said our source.
According to reports, Police wanted to stop the Kabanza owners from trading within the city and this led to the tense situation.

You can not scrape kabaza transport outright. This is a cheap form of transport even to the low, middle and sometimes the upper working class apart from the general travelling public. What the authorities should do is to regulate this form of transportation. There are developed economies like India, Kenya where I have been to and other countries where the bicycle is still being used as a most dependable form of transport. You see kabaza has in a way alleviated the massive unemployment in our country and there are unspeakable benefits accruing to most Malawian house holds from this enterprise. I think there’s nothing illegal to engage oneself in this business but perhaps government has to come in to regularise same by introducing road tax for example, wearing of helmets, bicycle inspection exercises, passenger and goods carrying capacity regulations etc etc but let this trade flourish
