Mayor of Malawi capital, Lilongwe Council Willie Mayor Chapondera has said that the council is seeking a lasting solution to the problem of street vending in the city.

He said street vending has for a long time been a problem for the council and they are planning to hold a meeting this week in order to address it.

”We are expected to hold a meeting with other councillors in order to find solutions to the problem,” said Chapondera.

He added that vendors had been adamant to leave the streets even though the council built a temporary market for the vendors to sell their goods in.

Worrisome to city council.

”Despite our efforts to end street vending by building a temporary market, vendors choose to sell their goods in the street and when police come they run away and return when they are gone,” he said.

However, Chapondera admitted that the council had failed to end street vending that is why they will hold a meeting to find real solutions together with other councillors.

For a long time government has been making strides to end street vending but most vendors had been adamant as they continue selling in the street despite having markets.
