Malawi Police in Balaka district are hunting for unknown criminals who have tampered with a grave of an albino in the district.
Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Joseph Sauka told Malawi24 that the incident happened during the night of 14th January at Mwawa village in the area of Traditional Authority Amidu. Sauka explained that the incident was reported to police by Hadija Salimu, 38, who is a mother to the deceased.
According to the Police publicist, 22 year-old White Salimu who was an albino died on 23rd March, 2015 after suffering from skin cancer and was buried 20 metres away from her house for fear that if buried at the village graveyard which is almost a kilometre away his body could have been stolen.
“Yesterday morning, the deceased mother and her relations were surprised to find that the grave had been tampered and they reported the matter to Police after suspecting that the body was stolen”, said Sauka.
After receiving the report, police rushed to the scene and with the help of the villagers they dug the grave again and fortunately the body was found intact.
Meanwhile, the Officer In-charge for Balaka Police Station Benfrey Kamanga has appealed to the general public to be alert and report anyone who is suspected to be involved in albino attacks.
Early last year, another albino was rescued in the district after unknown criminals attacked him in his house.
