Court documents have pinned down former Malawi President Joyce Banda as the brains behind cashgate.
With chilling evidence showing that over K553 billion was not accounted for during the two years she was president, latest court documents show that Banda started cashgate as a means to generate funds for her campaign.
The claims against the embattled Malawi ex-president who is in a self-imposed exile in South Africa have been made by former Principal Secretary (PS) for Ministry of Tourism and Culture Treza Senzani.
In the statement, Senzani says she personally delivered about K20 million of stolen public funds to Rachel Mazombwe Zulu who was then serving as Minister of Tourism and Culture.
According to Senzani, the Banda administration strategically placed officers to participate in the scam in commercial banks, at the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), at Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), and at Accountant General’s Department to ensure that the scheme was a success.
