A man in Lilongwe has launched a fundraising project to raise money for the purchase of a private jet for Malawi Government.

The man, Sidney Ndembe, said the project will generate US$20 million for the purchase of a jet for the country.

Speaking to the local press, Ndembe said Malawians must take responsibility by contributing towards the purchase of the jet.

“If the government has failed it is up to citizens to do it to help their government,” said Ndembe.

Ndembe further said the project will have a bank account that will be accountable and transparent.

Ndembe said:  “The records of the money will be published in newspapers for everyone to see how far the contributions are in terms of reaching the target.”

In 2009, late Bingu wa Mutharika bought a 14-passenger Dassault Falcon 900EX presidential jet worth US$13.26 million.

However, his successor, former President Joyce Banda, sold the jet due to numerous challenges that rocked the country.
