Malawi Government is rehabilitating the Liwonde barrage in Machinga district which will control water levels in Lake Malawi and make the collection of water by the Blantyre Water Board easier.

The 50 year old Liwonde barrage which is being rehabilitated under the Shire River Basin Management Programme will ensure safety to road users as there will be a bridge for them.

Minister of Transport and Public Infrastructure Francis Kasaila visited the barrage and was happy that there are some works going on.

“As a ministry we are happy that there are some works going on and the bridge being constructed will ensure safety for the road users,” said Kasaila.

He further said the project is very important as it will improve maritime services in the country.
