Locals Sue Mota Engil Over Land in Machinga

Malawians from Kauzu village Tradition Authority Sitola in Machinga district have dragged Portuguese Group construction company, Mota Engil to court for not giving them land compensation on the company intends to have a dry port in Liwonde township.

According to representing lawyer for the residents Nickson Masiku, the company has only given the people compensation money on houses and trees.

He further said that some people are living in misery following the project as they were given money less than K100,000 as compensation.

Commenting on the development Machinga district council threw to the ground the claims the residents have made saying site was meant for development projects and that the people do not deserve to receive compensation for the land.

Mota-Engil intends to construct a dry port estimated at $150 million that will offer a one stop cargo handling facility at Liwonde as opposed to receiving and shipping from the ports.

The facility will have connection to inland destinations with warehousing facilities and container terminals will be a center of cargo consolidation, customs clearances and freight forwarding.
