Contractors in Malawi warn that persistent fuel shortages could delay the completion of development projects.
The concern was raised in Kasungu on Wednesday when contractors received construction assignments under the Reformed Constituency Development Fund (RCDF).
Firstday Ching’ani, managing director of Umodzi wa Matipa Construction Company, said fuel shortages could disrupt construction activities and make it difficult for contractors to complete their work within the agreed timeframe.
He called on the government to take action to improve fuel availability and prevent possible delays.
The warning comes as Kasungu is set to implement development projects worth K55 billion across its 11 constituencies, with K5 billion allocated to each constituency.
The planned projects include accommodation for health workers at Chamwabvi, while a maternity facility at Dunda is also among the developments being undertaken.
Kasungu South East Member of Parliament Professor Golden Chizimba said he would raise the fuel shortage issue in Parliament.
Chizimba also warned contractors against delivering substandard work, saying projects funded with public money need to provide lasting benefits to communities.
He further warned that contractors who fail to start their assigned projects could have their contracts terminated.
Kasungu District Commissioner Lawford Palani urged communities to work together to protect and maintain infrastructure once the projects are completed.
