After years of sitting quietly at Monkey Bay, the MV Mtendere appears to have had enough of waiting, partly sinking into Lake Malawi.
The passenger vessel, operated by Malawi Lake Services, began sinking at Monkey Bay in Mangochi District, with employees saying one side had submerged in the lake by around 4 a.m on Monday.
The MV Mtendere last operated between 2012 and 2013 before it was taken out of service for renovations.
It has since remained idle at Monkey Bay for nearly a decade.
The cause of the sinking remains unclear, with the Ministry of Transport and Malawi Lake Services yet to issue an official statement.
No injuries have been reported.
The incident has sparked debate on social media, with some users questioning the management and maintenance of Malawi’s lake transport services.
Others have described the development as embarrassing, particularly given the vessel’s long period out of service.
