Fear and anger over a murdered motorcycle taxi operator have spilled into violence in Kang’oma, with five houses reportedly demolished and set ablaze.
Kawale Police Public Relations Officer Sub-Inspector Mabvuto Precious Phiri said police are investigating the attacks to identify and arrest Kabaza operators and other community members suspected of involvement.
The violence follows the murder of Kabaza operator Ezra Kaponda at Kang’oma Trading Centre on September 22, 2026.
Kaponda was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants who later stole his motorcycle.
After the incident, false information circulated in the community alleging that a man from Ngoma Village was responsible for the murder.
According to Phiri, a group of Kabaza operators, accompanied by some villagers from Chiwandila, went looking for the alleged suspect but failed to find him or recover the stolen motorcycle.
The suspect had reportedly fled the area, prompting the group to turn their anger on other community members, allegedly demolishing and setting fire to five houses.
Police have since launched investigations to identify and apprehend everyone involved in the attacks.
Phiri has warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, saying anyone found involved in the violence and destruction will face legal action.
