Pool day turned into a poop scene after a woman was filmed washing faeces from her daughter inside a children’s swimming pool at Eden Estates in Lilongwe.
The shocking incident happened on Saturday, with footage of the incident circulating on social media and triggering a heated debate over hygiene at shared recreational facilities.
Eden Estates management has since drained the affected pool and started disinfection and sanitation works to make it safe for other users.
In a statement seen by Malawi24, Eden Estates management identified the woman as Ms Wodala Linje, a resident of Area 43 in Lilongwe, and said she was at the children’s pool when the incident occurred.
The incident reportedly angered and disappointed some guests, forcing the estate to take immediate action over hygiene concerns.
The management said it will also replace all filters before refilling the pool, with the facility expected to reopen on Wednesday, September 23.
Only the affected swimming pool has been closed, while other pools, the Play Park and other services at the estate remain operational.
The incident has sparked strong reactions on social media, with users questioning the decision to wash a child inside a swimming pool used by other people.
Commenting on the Eden Estates statement, Estelita Mazariegos said swimming pools are shared facilities and users have a responsibility to maintain hygiene, safety and respect for others.
Mazariegos said children should be washed before entering swimming pools and supported the estate’s decision to disinfect the affected facility.
She, however, said the incident should be treated as a hygiene and consideration-for-others issue rather than an opportunity to judge the woman based on her background or circumstances.
Meanwhile, Eden Estates management alleged that the woman became hostile and aggressive during the incident and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
The allegation has not been independently verified.
Management said the pool will only reopen after the cleaning, sanitation and filter replacement process has been completed.
