The Tobacco Commission is taking its farmer registration exercise into Tobacco-growing communities as Malawi moves to strengthen the traceability of Tobacco ahead of the 2026/27 growing season.
Speaking to Malawi24, Telephorus Chigwenembe Public Relations Officer for the Commission said, the commission will conduct Know Your Grower (KYG) registration in various Tobacco-growing areas.
Chigwenembe said the exercise will be carried out from September 21 to October 3, 2026, after initially registering farmers at its offices since July 27.
The field exercise will also allow farmers to obtain licences to grow tobacco during the 2026/27 season, linking farmer registration with the licensing process.
Chigwenembe said the KYG initiative is designed to improve the traceability of Malawi’s tobacco by making it possible to identify where the crop originates.
According to the Chigwenembe, knowing the source of tobacco will help make Malawi’s tobacco more competitive on the international market.
The latest field registration drive therefore comes as part of efforts to establish clearer information about tobacco growers and the origin of the crop produced in Malawi.
