Malawi is set to take a major step towards modernising its identity management system with the introduction of the Nzika Digital ID Wallet, which will allow citizens to have a digital version of their national identity alongside the existing physical ID card.
The initiative, being introduced by the National Registration Bureau (NRB), is expected to make identification more convenient while supporting the growing use of digital services in the country.
The digital wallet will essentially bring the national ID into the digital space, giving citizens an additional way of presenting and accessing their identity information without relying solely on the physical card.
In a statement, the NRB said the innovation is expected to improve citizens’ access to digital services and make identity verification more convenient.
Beyond convenience, the Digital ID Wallet is also expected to help address some of the operational challenges associated with producing physical national identity cards.
According to the bureau, reducing the need for physical ID printing will lower the demand for printing consumables and result in savings for the government.
The initiative is also expected to reduce the overall turnaround time for obtaining a national ID, potentially making the identification process more efficient for citizens.
The NRB said the initiative also represents a major milestone in Malawi’s efforts to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Target 16.9, which aims to provide legal identity for all, including free birth registration, by 2030.
The Nzika Digital ID Wallet will officially be launched on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito will preside over the launch ceremony, which will start at 9:00am under the theme “My Digital ID, My Shadow, Never Apart.”
The event will also commemorate Africa Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Day and International Identity Day.
