Norman Chisale has revisited his bitter fallout with former Director of Public Prosecutions Steven Kayuni, revealing a change in his position.
The Ntcheu Central lawmaker says he could have dealt with Kayuni over what he describes as the suffering he and others endured, but has instead chosen to forgive him.
Speaking at a rally in his area in Ntcheu, Chisale said Kayuni was the first person he had forgiven, despite previously declaring that he would never forgive him.
“The first person I have forgiven is Steven Kayuni, who fled the country. If I wanted to deal with him, I could have done so, but let God judge him,” Chisale said.
Chisale accused Kayuni of persecuting not only him but also Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and Tadikira Mutharika.
He alleged that Kayuni was involved in his own six-month detention, while Bushiri’s daughter was prevented from travelling for medical treatment and Tadikira was detained for six months over what he described as false allegations.
Chisale said the experiences had caused him pain, but insisted that he had forgiven everyone involved.
His latest remarks mark a notable change from his earlier position on Kayuni. In 2023, Chisale said he would never forgive the former DPP following his arrest in connection with remarks he made about Kayuni.
But this time, Chisale says he has chosen to leave Kayuni’s fate to God rather than seek revenge.
The issue of forgiveness came as Chisale was also expressing anger towards the Malawi Congress Party, accusing it of mistreating him and other people from Ntcheu.
Chisale said he was prepared to sacrifice his own wellbeing to ensure MCP does not win a parliamentary seat in Ntcheu, warning the party that what he described as mistreatment of people from the district should not happen again.
