A National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) member is moving to court in a bid to halt the organization’s electoral process, citing concerns over the credibility and fairness of the elections.
Tonex Mkwezalamba, a paid-up member of NONM, has informed Malawi24 of his intention to seek an injunction pending judicial review, arguing that several outstanding issues must be resolved before the elections proceed.
Among the concerns is the appointment of the current Electoral Commission chairperson following the resignation of George Nkhoma, who is now contesting for a position in the same elections.
Mkwezalamba has also raised concerns over alleged premature campaigning by some presidential candidates ahead of the official campaign period, which is understood to run from October 25 to November 25, 2026.
Another issue concerns voting representation, with claims that some hospitals and institutions with paid-up NONM members have no representation in the voting process.
According to Mkwezalamba, all eligible paid-up members should have an opportunity to participate in choosing the organisation’s leadership.
He has further questioned Nkhoma’s decision to resign as Electoral Commission chairperson and subsequently contest in the elections, describing the situation as a potential conflict of interest.
“How can a referee play in the same game he is referring?” he questioned.
Mkwezalamba said members could not remain silent while concerns affecting the credibility of the elections persisted.
“The organisation belongs to its members, and its elections must be conducted in a manner that is transparent, credible, fair and consistent with its Constitution,” he said.
He said the planned court action is intended to temporarily stop the electoral process until the outstanding concerns are addressed.
