…petrol, diesel prices maintained
Paraffin users will pay more at the pump from today after the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) raised the maximum price of the fuel by 5.74 percent.
The price has jumped from K4,389 to K4,641 per litre, effective 00:01 hours today, September 12, 2026.
The increase comes as MERA maintains the prices of petrol and diesel at K5,619 and K5,863 per litre, respectively.
In a statement signed by board chairperson Lucas Kondowe, MERA says the decision follows a review by its Energy Pricing Committee under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM).
“In line with the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM), the MERA Board resolved to maintain the pump prices of petrol and diesel, and to increase the price of kerosene effective 00:01 Hours on 12th September 2026,” read the statement.
The review considered August movements in free-on-board prices, road and rail freight, insurance, handling costs, in-transit losses, taxes, levies and margins.
MERA says the decision to raise the paraffin price comes as international petroleum markets remain under pressure.
The authority has also pointed to the continuing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East as a factor exerting pressure on global petroleum prices and related supply chain costs.
MERA says it will continue monitoring developments in international petroleum markets.
The authority has reminded retailers that they are legally required to sell petrol, diesel and paraffin at prices not exceeding the approved maximum pump prices.
