Families left without homes by Cyclone Freddy are getting a fresh start in Mulanje, with dozens now moving into houses built through a shelter recovery project.
The project, implemented by Habitat for Humanity Malawi, has so far delivered 70 houses to affected families in Traditional Authority Njema.
Mulanje District Director of Economic Planning and Development Edgar Chihana said the new homes have restored shelter, dignity and privacy to families who were forced to live in camps and schools after the cyclone.
He said the houses have provided much-needed relief to families who lost their homes when Cyclone Freddy struck.
Chihana made the remarks during a monitoring and appreciation visit by Habitat for Humanity Malawi and Mulanje District Council to assess the progress and impact of the project in Mujiwa Village.
Habitat for Humanity Malawi Construction Specialist Mayamiko Sailesi said the project was providing decent shelter to families still recovering from the disaster.
Sailesi said the project had not faced major technical challenges, although poor road conditions had delayed the transportation of construction materials to some sites.
He said the organisation was working to complete the remaining houses before the onset of the rainy season.
Sailesi also called for continued collaboration between Habitat for Humanity Malawi, Mulanje District Council and community structures to ensure the project is completed successfully.
The organisation plans to construct 10 additional houses, bringing the total number of homes under the project to 80.
The project is aimed at providing permanent shelter to more families affected by Cyclone Freddy.
