A rescue mission turned tragic at a Lilongwe factory after two workers drowned in a septic tank.

The deceased, identified as Feedson Thunga, 23, and Jamison Lewis, died while attempting to clear a blockage at a kombucha drink production company located at Njewa Industrial Site.

According to police, Thunga, who worked as a general worker at the company, was assigned to clear a blockage in the septic tank when he became trapped inside.

His colleague Lewis reportedly rushed to rescue him after noticing that he was in distress, but he also became overwhelmed inside the tank and could not escape.

Fellow workers later managed to remove the two from the septic tank, but they were already lifeless.

Lilongwe Police Station detectives visited the scene following the incident and have launched investigations to establish what led to the deaths.

The bodies have since been taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to determine the exact cause of death.

Thunga came from Njonja Village, Traditional Authority Machete in Dedza District, while details of Lewis’ home village are yet to be established.
