A former NBS Bank employee serving a 10-year prison sentence for financial misconduct has sought forgiveness from his former employer.
Gift Nafere met NBS Bank officials at the bank’s Limbe Branch through the Malawi Prisons Service’s Restorative Justice and Peacebuilding Programme, where he apologised for the pain caused by his actions and accepted responsibility for the offence.
Nafere said his time in prison has helped him reflect on his mistakes and understand the damage he caused.
“I was not forced to be here. I thought it wise to reach out to you to officially apologise for the pain I have caused,” he said.
He said his incarceration has changed the way he viewed life and relationships and urged others to think before they act, live within their means, and protect their integrity.
Acting Head of Human Resources at NBS Bank, Chenjerani Kanyinji, said the bank has forgiven Nafere and described the reconciliation as an important step towards rebuilding relationships.
Kanyinji said the process has also given the bank an opportunity to reflect on what happened and identify lessons that could help strengthen its systems.
Nafere is currently teaching at Blantyre Prison Reformatory School while serving his sentence. He said he hopes to return to society as a responsible citizen after completing his prison term.
Nafere was convicted over the theft of K47 million from NBS Bank in a case that attracted national attention.
His meeting with former colleagues forms part of the Malawi Prisons Service’s Restorative Justice and Peacebuilding Programme, which promotes accountability, reconciliation, and the successful reintegration of offenders into society.
