Female inmates at Thyolo Prison are set to experience improved sleeping conditions after receiving 100 new mattresses.
Lunzu Constituency Member of Parliament Claus Chikufenji on Saturday donated 100 Robray mattresses worth MK8 million to the prison through Akonda Ministry.
Chikufenji, who led the delegation, said the donation was meant to improve inmates’ living conditions and restore their dignity by addressing poor sleeping conditions, one of the challenges they face behind bars.
“The government alone cannot meet every societal need, this is why I introduced Akonda Ministry. These inmates are human beings who deserve love, dignity, and care. Although they are in prison, they remain members of our society.” he said.
He added that he hopes the mattresses will make the inmates more comfortable and remind them that they have not been forgotten.

Officer-in-Charge of Thyolo Female Prison, Emily Banda, described the donation as timely and life-changing and she said many inmates had been sleeping on the floor, a challenge that was worse during the cold season.
“Today is a memorable day for our inmates because they will now sleep on mattresses. This will improve both their comfort and well-being,” she said.
Speaking on behalf of fellow inmates, Naomi Namwendo thanked Chikufenji and Akonda Ministry for the gesture.
“We are deeply grateful for this donation. We will now sleep peacefully and comfortably. This gesture has taught us the importance of sharing and caring for others,” she said.
