Commissioner of Police for the Eastern Region, Jane Mandala, has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in murder cases in Mayaka, Zomba District, saying police will not spare anyone found on the wrong side of the law.
Mandala made the remarks at Saint Martin Ground in Mayaka during a sensitization campaign aimed at curbing murder, mob justice and other violent crimes.She said police will continue pursuing suspects and ensure that all those involved in criminal activities are arrested and prosecuted.
“Police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone involved in criminal activities,” said Mandala.
The Commissioner also assured residents of improved security, saying police will intensify both foot and vehicle patrols in the area.She further cautioned community members against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that mob justice is a criminal offence punishable by law.
Member of Parliament for Zomba Chikomwe Constituency, Antony Kamoto, who sponsored the bonanza, welcomed the awareness campaign, describing it as timely amid the recent killings of elderly people in the area.
Kamoto appealed for increased manpower and improved mobility at Mayaka Police Unit. In response, Mandala assured the gathering that the concerns would be looked into.
The legislator also commended police for the swift arrests of some suspects linked to the brutal killings and pledged his support towards initiatives aimed at strengthening security in the area.
Speaking earlier, Sub Traditional Authority Mwembele expressed concern over the rising murder cases and called for joint patrols involving police officers and Community Policing Forum members.
The campaign featured performances by the Malawi Police Orchestra and concluded with a football bonanza final between Zomba Police Football Club and Mayaka United.
