Former DPP vice president Kondwani Nakhumwa says internal power struggles, not personal choice, forced him out of the party.
Nakhumwa alleged that some senior party officials saw him as a barrier to their political ambitions and worked behind the scenes to force him out so they could secure influential positions within the party.
He made the remarks on Sunday during Melting Point program on Mij Online Facebook page.
Nakhumwa however says that during his time with DPP he learned to work together and to stop moving from one party to another.
He says even now when he interacts with people holding lower positions in the party, they tell him that things are not the same as when he was in the DPP.
“Even as we sit here, people at the grassroots in that party talk to me and say ‘the way things are now is not how they were when you were there. What happened?’ They are also surprised,” he said.
Nakhumwa added that when people see that someone has potential they try to fight them.
He quoted the Bible, using the story of Joseph where he said when Joseph’s brothers saw that one day he would rule over them, they plotted to kill him but by chance they did not kill him. Instead, they threw him away and sold him.
He said after some time, the very same person who was sold, came back and helped to save those people from dying.
Nakhumwa said the way he looks at how his own story played out, he believes it was a plan that God had for his life.
He also related his situation to President Peter Mutharika that people who started promoting Mutharika to run for President again went through many problems, but it eventually worked out.
In the same way, he said, former President Lazarus Chakwera also faced problems with people saying it was impossible for the Malawi Congress Party to return to government, but it happened.
Nakhumwa said despite all this, there are still people who have been asking him to return to the DPP.
He therefore urged people not to underestimate anyone, because what God has planned, we do not know.
