A breakthrough has emerged in the investigation into the murder of 28-year-old medical doctor Dr. Atughanile Chomo.
The Malawi Police Service has arrested a 25-year-old suspect believed to be connected to the killing.
The suspect, identified as Macmillan Mvevula, was arrested following an intelligence-led operation conducted by detectives from the Blantyre Criminal Investigations Department (CID), just two days after Dr. Chomo’s body was found at her home in Mount Pleasant, Blantyre.
Police say they have also recovered a Redmi mobile phone believed to belong to the deceased, while forensic evidence has been collected to strengthen the case as investigations continue.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Deputy National Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Alfred Chimthere said the arrest marks significant progress in the probe into the doctor’s death.
“The Malawi Police Service has arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Macmillan Mvevula, in connection with the murder of Dr. Atughanile Chomo, whose body was discovered at her residence in Mount Pleasant, Blantyre, on July 7, 2026,” reads part of the statement.
According to police, the suspect hails from Mtika Village under Traditional Authority Ngolongoliwa in Thyolo District. He remains in police custody and is expected to appear before court soon.
The arrest comes after police earlier confirmed that Dr. Chomo’s death was being treated as a murder, sending shockwaves through the medical fraternity and the public, who have been demanding swift justice.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are still underway.
