Malawi’s arts industry is proving its power goes far beyond entertainment, with musicians and digital creators inspiring thousands of citizens to give millions of kwacha in a nationwide campaign to rescue stranded Malawians in South Africa.

Leading the charge are renowned musicians Namadingo and Lulu, alongside online platform Mikozi, whose mobilisation efforts have helped push donations past K24 million in just 72 hours through PayChangu, bringing fresh momentum to the K1 billion fundraising drive.

The PayChangu platform handled the sudden influx of micro-donations from over 8,000 citizens like a digital superhighway expanding to meet demand, demonstrating an unprecedented speed of digital fundraising in the country.

Fueling this momentum was a wave of high-profile support. Namadingo initiated the drive with a K2 million personal donation, quickly followed by fellow artist Lulu (K1.5 million), Mikozi (K1 million), and thousands of other contributors.

Because the payment system was running like clockwork from the moment the portal went live, every single contribution was routed effortlessly through the PayChangu network.

As the volume of donations surged toward the campaign’s K1 billion target, PayChangu proved to be a digital lifeline for the relief effort.

A senior representative from Mikozi publicly praised the integration, noting that the transaction process was “just so smooth.”

This third-party validation highlighted the gateway’s ability to handle high-stakes transfers without friction.

Echoing this grassroots sentiment, Joshua Mwendo of PayChangu noted that the company’s systems were built precisely for moments of national mobilization.

“The company’s commitment to secure, reliable, and customer-centric services has earned it national recognition, positioning it as a key player in Malawi’s digital transformation,” Mwendo stated.

This capacity is rooted in the company’s foundation. Licensed by the Reserve Bank of Malawi just over a year ago, PayChangu was developed specifically to streamline transactions and promote financial inclusion.

Consequently, the success of this campaign serves as a real-world case study of how digital finance solutions can democratize philanthropy, providing artists with the tools to turn national empathy into immediate financial action.

Beyond the technology and metrics, the fundraising effort remains active as Malawians continue to show solidarity with their compatriots abroad.

This urgent sense of unity follows recent anxieties and threats targeting undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa, which have prompted sudden calls for governmental repatriation.

Yet, through it all, PayChangu’s backend technology has ensured that every kwacha donated reaches its destination securely, cementing the brand’s reputation as the trusted engine of modern Malawian digital commerce and civic action.
