The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has recorded a significant drop in road traffic accidents and fatalities during the 2026 Independence Day holiday.
According to National Police Deputy publicRelationsOfficer, Alfred Chimthere, two fatal road accidents were recorded this year, down from six during the same period in 2025. This represents a 67 percent decrease.
The number of people killed also fell sharply and road traffic deaths dropped from seven in 2025 to two in 2026, a 71 percent reduction.
In addition, no serious road traffic accidents were recorded this year, compared to one in 2025, which marks a 100 percent decrease.

MPS also reported seven minor road accidents during the holiday, in which eight people sustained slight injuries.
No damage but only accidents were recorded this year, compared to one in 2025 and the police attribute the decline to coordinated road safety interventions.
These included intensified traffic law enforcement, increased highway patrols, and nationwide road safety campaigns conducted in collaboration with stakeholders.
