A routine family departure turned into unimaginable heartbreak in Kasungu after a one-year, 11-month-old girl was fatally run over by a vehicle driven by her father.
The tragic accident happened on Wednesday morning in the Bua 3 area as the family was preparing to leave home.
Unaware that little Mirabel Banda had moved underneath the vehicle, her father drove off, fatally injuring the toddler.
Kasungu Police deputy spokesperson Miracle Hauli said the child sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Bua Community Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed her death.
“The child was taken to Bua Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead after sustaining severe head injuries,” Hauli told media.
Following the incident, police have appealed to parents and motorists to always ensure that children are in a safe place before moving a vehicle.
Hauli urged drivers to make it a habit to check around and underneath their vehicles before driving off, especially when leaving home, saying the simple precaution could help prevent similar tragedies.
