Trade between Malawi and Tanzania has increased from US$86.5 million in 2021 to US$98.2 million in 2024, representing a 13.5 percent growth, officials have said.
The figures were presented in Lilongwe during the signing of the Simplified Trade Regime (STR) Agreement between the Republic of Malawi and the United Republic of Tanzania.
Tanzania’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Judith Salvio Kapinga, described the signing as “a historic occasion for both nations.”
She said Tanzania’s exports to Malawi rose from US$64 million in 2021 to US$77.7 million in 2024, while imports from Malawi declined from US$22.5 million to US$20.5 million during the same period.
Kapinga said despite the growth, there remains untapped potential in value addition, cross-border trade and investment partnerships.
She said the STR will simplify customs documentation, reduce administrative barriers and encourage traders to shift from informal to formal channels.
The minister added that the agreement is expected to enhance safety and dignity for women and youth traders and strengthen food security and livelihoods in border communities.
