Malawi Government vows to boost women’s empowerment on International Women’s Day

The Government of Malawi is reaffirming its commitment to advancing women’s rights and empowerment as the country prepares to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD) on Friday.

Deputy Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Martha Mzomera Ngwira, said this on Wednesday during a press briefing at the Capital Hill in Lilongwe.

Ngwira stressed the significance of International Women’s Day, noting both the progress made in achieving gender equality and the obstacles that still need to be addressed.

“Women are central to sustainable development. Their rights must be protected, their voices amplified, and their contributions valued,” she said.

Ngwira also pointed out that Malawi still faces issues like gender-based violence and limited access to justice, but the government is committed to driving gender justice initiatives forward.

United Nations (UN) Women Deputy Country Representative, Fatima Muhammad, recognised Malawi’s strong laws protecting women and girls, but noted that making them work is still a big challenge.

“Underfunding and cultural norms undermine women’s roles, hindering their advancement in communities,” Muhammad said.

The IWD commemoration is themed “Rights, Justice, and Action for all Women and Girls” and will feature a panel discussion, press statements, and community outreach activities focusing on access to justice and promoting women’s rights.
