Defying expectations of leadership change, Ugandans have extended President Yoweri Museveni’s rule to four decades. Museveni has been ruling Uganda since 1986, which marks 40 years in power.
The elections, which were held on 15th January 2026, have given another five years to the 81-year-old Museveni, who got 72% of the votes against opponent, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who got 25% of the votes.
As the vote count was in progress, Wine complained that the elections were conducted in the dark as the internet in the country was shut down.
He stated that there was massive ballot stuffing in many parts of the country. Regarding Wine’s claims, the African Union election observers stated that there was no evidence of his allegations.
It is alleged that Wine’s house was heavily surveilled, and he was later abducted and then escaped the abduction.
Meanwhile, Wine has called for non-violent protests, and he has demanded that the internet be restored.
