Member of Parliament for Mtandire-Mtsiriza, Alfred Gangata, has pledged to personally repair hundreds of homes damaged by persistent heavy rains that have battered the constituency since before Christmas 2025.

The rains, which intensified over the past week, have left widespread destruction in their wake, washing away roofs, collapsing walls, displacing families and damaging key access roads.

However, Gangata has prioritised shelter and food for affected residents over infrastructure repairs.

Speaking during an assessment tour of the affected areas, Gangata’s representative, Kim Kamau, said the MP was deeply concerned by the scale of the damage and had resolved to act immediately using his own resources.

“Honourable Gangata felt it was his responsibility to help the people who entrusted him with leadership during the 16 September polls,” Kamau said. “Many families have lost both their homes and food supplies after floods swept through their houses.”

Kamau revealed that 378 houses have been affected across the constituency.

He said the MP will provide essential building materials, including bricks, iron sheets, cement and timber, to facilitate reconstruction.

In cases where homes have been completely destroyed, Gangata will also cover rental costs for displaced families.

In addition to housing support, some affected households will receive relief food after their reserves were washed away by floodwaters.

Kamau toured the damaged homes alongside councillors and chiefs, assessing the extent of destruction and identifying families most in need.

Residents have welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely relief as many struggle to recover from the devastating impact of the rains.
