Police in Lilongwe are investigating why Peter Mwenyeveza, a 25-year-old two-time ex-convict, managed to remain outside prison walls and continue committing serious crimes despite receiving lengthy imprisonment sentences.

According to Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer, Hastings Chigalu, Mwenyeveza, was arrested last week for allegedly committing a series of high-profile motorcycle robberies in Lilongwe.

It is reported that he has been convicted twice before; four years for cattle rustling in Mchinji District in 2024 and six years for motorcycle theft in Lilongwe in June 2025.

Police say Mwenyeveza, also known as Peter Mwale, was arrested following a manhunt launched after a surge in suspicious motorcycle robberies, in which most victims were either seriously wounded or killed.

Following police investigations, detectives traced clues linking fugitive assailants to the suspect.Chigalu said police are looking into how Mwenyeveza evaded prison and continued committing crimes. Mwenyeveza is currently in police custody.

“So we have also arrested him this time around so we come to wonder as to why he continues to find himself outside the prison walls despite being given lengthy sentences so we have launched further investigations” he said.

Mwenyeveza, currently in police custody hails from Kasina Village, Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza District.
