The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has recorded a K40 million surplus from the just-ended African Netball Cup, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has confirmed.

The continental tournament was held from 8 to 14 December 2025at the Griffin Saenda Sports Complex in Lilongwe.

According to the LOC, the tournament was delivered within a projected budget of K650 million, with prudent financial management and partner support resulting in the surplus.

The excess funds will be channelled directly to NAM to support the development of the sport.

Presenting the official report, Local Organising Committee Chairperson Limbani Matola described the event as a resounding success, saying Malawi defied scepticism and exceeded expectations in hosting the prestigious competition.

He noted that World Netball formally commended the country for meeting and surpassing international hosting standards.

Matola said the Griffin Saenda Sports Complex proved to be an ideal venue, enabling smooth competition operations throughout the six-day tournament.

Beyond sport, the event generated economic benefits through increased demand for accommodation, food services, transport and temporary employment.

He acknowledged the Malawi Government’s financial contribution, revealing that an initial K243 million allocation served as a critical starter fund.

Additional support from corporate partners later strengthened the budget and eased financial pressure during the planning stages.

“At some point, resources were stretched, but collective support made the difference,” Matola said. “By the end of the tournament, we had achieved a K40 million surplus, which will benefit the Netball Association of Malawi.”

Matola added that the success of the African Netball Cup has enhanced Malawi’s capacity and confidence to host larger international events.

He also thanked Vice President Jane Ansah, First Lady Gertrude Mutharika and Minister of Sports Patricia Wiskes for their visits and encouragement.

Representing the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Culture, MacMillan Mwale praised the strong collaboration among government, NAM, sponsors and other stakeholders, saying the partnership demonstrated during the tournament sets a positive benchmark for future sporting events in Malawi.
