Limbe Senior Resident Magistrate Court has sentenced 25-year-old Ganizani Kamuna and 20-year-old Peter Welosi to 20 years imprisonment with hard labor for breaking into a house, injuring family members and stealing items worth K1.9 million.
According to Limbe Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Maxwell Jailos, Sub Inspector Armson Joseph of Bangwe Police Post, the two committed the offence on 3 November this year in Bangwe Township.
“On the said date at midnight, the two whilst armed with panga knives and axes, broke and entered a house where they managed to assault the couple before going away with assorted item like Phones, Plasma TV screen, Genset and other assorted items all valued at K1,989,000,” said Joseph.
The two were arrested at Luchenza in Thyolo and some of the stolen items like a Generator and the Plasma Screen were recovered.
They pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery and in mitigation they both pleaded with the court for leniency saying they are breadwinners in their respective families therefore their families would suffer if sent to jail.
In his submission, Sub Inspector Joseph asked the court for a stiff sentence saying the duo posed a great threat to the lives of the victims since they injured the family and also wanted to steal a 10 month-old baby. Joseph further said such cases are on the increase hence a deterence sentence was ideal.
Passing sentence, Magistrate Mchilima concurred with the state and sentenced the duo to 20 years behind bars to deter other would be offenders.
