Vice president of Malawi, Saulos Klaus Chilima claims he was sacked from President Peter Mutharika’s cabinet because of his good performance in the government.

Chilima said this during the presidential debate on Friday.

One of the presidential candidates Professor John Chisi of Umodzi Party accused Chilima of UTM and Atupele Muluzi of UDF who is also Minister of Health for doing nothing over the past five years to implement the changes they are seeking.

Responding to this assertion, Saulos Chilima aggressively said despite his good performances, he was serving a failed government and couldn’t manage to change the nation under its poor governance but rather, he can do better if he is a leader.

The vice president was in charge of public sector reforms and disaster preparedness in the DPP government.

During the debate, Chilima also claimed that his office has not been receiving funding from the government since last year. He was responding to accusations that he is receiving salary without being paid.

The UTM then attacked Mutharika saying candidates who did not show up for the debate should not be voted.

“Snubbing the debate is evidence that he does not want the presidency,” Chilima said.

Chilima dumped the ruling Democratic Progressive Party last year to form the UTM and launch his bid for the presidency.
